Five possible replacements for under-fire Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp reaction, after Liverpool won Premier League

Jurgen Klopp has gone through a lot since the turn of the year, with Liverpool failing to win any of the last six home games in the Premier League. The Reds’ latest defeat against bottom dwellers Fulham has put the German manager on the hot seat and the bookies suggest that he is the second favourite to getting sacked after Newcastle boss Steve Bruce. Furthermore, it has been reported that Klopp could quit the Reds in favour of the national team job after the Euros this year. Here are the five possible replacements for the former Borussia Dortmund gaffer.

Steven Gerrard

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard recently led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title, thus ending the dominance of the arch-rivals Celtic. After his brief spell with the Reds youth set-up, Gerrard kick-started his professional managerial career at Rangers in 2018 and has since been impressive. The former English international has turned the Gers into a force to reckon with, eventually leading them to the title this season. Gerrard prefers an energetic and high pressing style of play, which is quite akin to Klopp. The 41-year-old would have a warm reception as a manager at Anfield given his legendary career as a player.

Julian Nagelsmann

German managers are in great demand in the current market due to their expansive style of play and RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann is one of the names often whispered among the European elite. The young gaffer gained massive recognition after turning Leipzig into a regular top-four contender in Bundesliga and for the dream run they had at the Champions League last term, eventually ending up as the semifinalists. This season, Leipzig pose a major threat to Bayern’s title defence as they are second in the table and are trailing only by three points. Liverpool would be expected to face stern competition from Tottenham and Real Madrid if they were to recruit Nagelsmann.

Marco Rose

As mentioned earlier, German tacticians are creating huge waves in European football at the moment and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marco Rose is worth mentioning. In his first season in Bundesliga last term, Rose helped Gladbach qualify for the Champions League and made them an exciting team to watch out for. Gladbach produced some eye-catching displays against Real Madrid and Inter Milan in the Champions League this season although their form in Bundesliga has taken a hit of late, especially when it was revealed that Rose would leave the club at the end of this season to manage Dortmund.

Pep Lijnders

One of the low-profile names on the list yet Lijnders could be a reliable option given his long-running service as the Reds’ assistant coach. Having watched Klopp from close quarters, you can expect the Dutch gaffer to follow a similar philosophy as the German boss.

Lijnders about his philosophy: Our style is to attack, with and without the ball.

“We realise that the game is played with one ball, our ball, and we steal it back wherever on the pitch and we use it to attack the opponent. It doesn’t matter who we play against, we will press them high and aggressively and we will attack and attack them again.”

Max Allegri

Max Allegri comes with a wealth of experience and unlike all of the managers mentioned above, the Italian knows how to scrape results in the long run although his style of play can be described as pragmatic. Allegri’s surreal run at Juventus is the one you would rarely see or hear about. However, he was sacked in the summer two years ago and has since been on the lookout for a new club to resume his managerial career.
