Barcelona 5-0 Alaves: Messi ended season with 25 goals and 21 assists

Barcelona picked up an impressive 5-0 win over Alaves away from home. 

Goals from Ansu Fati, Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Nélson Semedo sealed all three points for the Catalan giants at Mendizorroza.

The away side dominated from start to finish and they will be relieved to have finished the season on a high. Within 15 minutes from start, Barcelona hit post twice, and then in next 60 minutes, they pounded five goals against Alaves.

Alaves came close to scoring the first goal of the game when Manu Garcia skied a chance. However, Barcelona came back strong and they could have easily scored through Fati and Messi. Both players came close to giving the away side the lead.

Eventually, it was Ansu Fati who converted from close-range with a volley after he was set up by Lionel Messi midway through the first half. The assist was Messi’s 21st in the league this term, breaking the record his former team-mate Xavi set in 2008-09.

Barcelona’s lead was doubled when Messi scored his 24th goal of the campaign just after the first drinks break. Puig set up the Argentine’s goal.

Star striker Luis Suarez added a third for Barcelona. Semedo slammed home Barça’s fourth and with 15 minutes left to play, Jordi Alba’s cross was swept home by Messi. This took Argentinian goal talley to 25 this season, four more than Karim Benzema of Real Madrid.

Barcelona conceded the title to Real Madrid this season and they will be devastated with the outcome but today’s win will give them some relief. They will be looking to bounce back in style next year.

The win of Alaves is a reminder of how good they can be when they are on form.

Meanwhile, Barcelona will now look to finish the season on a high by doing well in the UEFA Champions League.
