Bayern Munich were among several Bundesliga clubs to return to training for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic halted the campaign.
After around two weeks of ‘cyber training’, the FC Bayern first team trained in small groups at Säbener Straße for the first time again on Monday since the coronavirus pandemic halted the campaign.
Bundesliga champions trained in groups of five but without any contact, as did the others like Borussia Monchengladbach and Wolfsburg. Paderborn also worked in small groups, and coach Steffen Baumgart said, he is happy that the players to “get the ball on their feet again”.
Germany’s top flight has been suspended since 13 March until at least 30 April.
“It was certainly a very unusual feeling holding a training session in small groups today, but it was also nice to see the boys in person again,” said Bayern captain Manuel Neuer.
Training began with a warm-up routine, followed by running and shooting drills and technical training which were “elements in which the necessary social distancing can be adhered to.”
In line with government policy and the relevant authorities, all hygiene measures were strictly observed to slow the spread of coronavirus. In today’s session, the players were separated into groups of no more than five and progressed through a series of four stations set up by the coaches and training staff. They had to change in separate cabins after parking their cars far away from each other in the underground parking garage at Säbener Strasse.
Bayern were top of the league at the time of the season being stopped, four points clear of Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern said that training will be held in private with no members of the public allowed.
“In order to further slow the spread of the coronavirus, Bayern asks fans to continue to follow the instructions of the authorities and therefore please do not come to the Bayern training ground,” added the statement.
More than 1,300 people have died in Germany from the coronavirus.
