Bayern 2-1 Wolfsburg: Lewandowski double rescues Bayern

Robert Lewandowski-Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich came from behind to win on Wednesday with a Lewandowski second double enough to give Flick boys their eight wins from 12 matches.

The defending champions were trailing for much of the first half before a Lewandowski intervention put them on level terms a few minutes before halftime. The Polish striker was again on hand to capitalise on a defensive error to send Bayern into second place behind Leverkusen.

The home side who made four changes to the side that drew against Union Berlin last time out started the brighter side. They could have opened the scoring within three minutes, but visiting defender Roussillon recovered quickly to nick the ball off Sane before the winger could shoot.

But the bright opening didn’t stop the visitors from taking the lead as they capitalised on a sloppy defending from Bayern to take the lead. Mbabu was the architect of the goal, firing in a great cross into the Bayern box to pick out Maximilian Philipp, who found the net with a low shot.

The goal was not enough to wake the home team up, and the visitors continued to mount the pressure and could have been further ahead, had they added better finishing to their chances.

Bayern made them pay for their profligacy in front of goal just before the break with Lewandowski nodding past Koen Casteels after being found unmarked at the far post by a Joshua Kimmich cross.

That was Bayern’s first shot on target, and they made the visitors pay for it. Their second shot also led to a goal, but this time, it was the visitors who presented the opportunity.

The goal came in the 50th minute with Lewandowski on hand to fire past Casteels after Lacroix had slipped while attempting to clear Boateng’s direct pass.

The goal was harsh on the visitors who had been the better side in the context, but the two shots on target were all Bayern needed to take home all three points as the visitors could not find a way past Neuer in the second half.

The result condemned Wolfsburg to their first loss of the season, while Bayern returned to winning ways after their stalemate with Union Berlin over the weekend.
