Inter held by Atalanta for a 1-1 draw, after early goal by Martinez

Lukaku and Martinez celebrating Inter goal against Atalanta

Serie-A table topper Inter Milan conceded the chance to move three points ahead of defending champion Juventus, as Antonio Conte’s side were held by Atalanta at 1-1.

Lautaro Martinez scored the first goal from Romelu Lukaku’s through pass for his 17th goal of the season and put Inter ahead after just four minutes at the San Siro.

Atalanta dominated in the second half and Robin Gosens converted to draw the visitors level on 75 minutes. The match saw Samir Handanovic saved Luis Muriel’s late penalty to deny Atalanta victory.

Martinez had seen an effort cleared off the line by Berat Djimsiti midway through the first half, while Atalanta went close to an equaliser through Rafael Toloi shortly before half-time.

Martinez was again fortunate not to concede a spot-kick when he impeded Rafael Toloi towards the end of the first half. In other occasion, Atalanta could get a penalty kick and 22-year-old Argentine striker could have also been sent off, as he was not competing for the ball at all. VAR referee Massimiliano Irrati didn’t highlight the incident.

Atalanta, the league’s top goalscorers after winning their previous two Serie A matches by a 5-0 scoreline, deserved their equaliser, but Inter captain Handanovic produced a good save low to his right to prevent a late turnaround after Alessandro Bastoni had conceded an 88th-minute spot-kick.

Inter extend their unbeaten run to 12 league games since their sole defeat of the season, against Juventus in October, but the reigning champions can move top of the table if they win against Roma.
