Juventus came into the second leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit after struggling in the first leg against Porto.
The Italian champions signed Cristiano Ronaldo to improve their fortunes in the Champions League and they were under enormous pressure this year after two underwhelming exits prior to this season.
They were eliminated by the likes of Ajax and Lyon in the last two seasons and Ronaldo failed to help the Italians make it third time lucky as they crashed out of the competition against Porto tonight.
Juventus looked vulnerable at the back and they will be disappointed to have been without the likes of Giorgio Chiellini and Matthias de Ligt in a vital game like this. They would have had a great chance of going through if they had their best centre backs on the pitch tonight.
Porto made an impressive start to the game by taking the lead in the 19th minute. Sergio Oliveira opened the scoring with a calm penalty for the visitors.
The home side struggled to find an opening in the first half but they managed to find a way back in the second half through Federico Chiesa who got them back into the contest with two outstanding goals.
Juventus were handed a major boost in the second half when Porto striker Medhi Taremi was sent off under bizarre circumstances.
The striker picked up his second booking of the night after booting the ball away after the referee’s whistle.
Yet Juventus failed to make the most of the opportunity and win the game against a ten-man Porto side in normal time.
The likes of Alvaro Morata and Juan Cuadrado came close late on in the game but the Spaniard was flagged offside and the Colombian was denied by the crossbar.
With both teams winning their home games 2-1, the tie progressed into extra time.
The home side had the advantage of an extra man but they looked bereft of ideas going forward and it was the visitors who struck late on to level the scores.
Oliveira scored his second goal of the night with a free-kick to put Porto ahead on aggregate.
The home side were given a ray of hope by Adrien Rabiot who scored a headed goal in the 117th minute of the game to make it 3-2 but Juventus still needed another goal to win the tie on aggregate.
In the end, the tie was settled 4-4 on aggregate but Porto had the luxury of two away goals and they have now booked their place in the next round of the competition.
