Barcelona transfer strategy: Joan Laporta seeking free transfers and cost-effective signings

Barcelona are one of the busiest clubs in the transfer window as they are planning for a summer overhaul.

With president Joan Laporta at the helm, their transfer strategy turns out to be different compared to the previous seasons.

Given the current financial struggles, the Blaugrana have been targeting quite a few free transfers and cheap signings.

Barca are understood to have secured the deals for Sergio AgueroEric Garcia and Georginio Wijnaldum, who all will arrive as free transfers.

Aguero’s transfer has been cited as a measure to persuade Blaugrana skipper Lionel Messi to extend his contract, which will expire this summer.

The Argentine striker, who recently bid farewell to Manchester City, will bring a lot of experience to Blaugrana’s attack.

Wijnaldum’s signing is said to be done at the behest of manager Ronald Koeman as both had previously worked in the Netherlands national team.

Perhaps, the 30-year-old had been long pursued by Barca as Koeman seeks to add more physicality to the midfield.

Eric Garcia has been cited as the successor to Gerard Pique, and his return to the Nou Camp is teased for months.

Besides, Barca are keeping tabs on Lyon striker Memphis Depay and AC Milan goalkeeper, who are seeking a transfer from their respective clubs as their contract ends this summer.

Depay has plenty of suitors; however, he sets his heart out on joining the Catalans this summer.
