FC Porto

Portuguese giants Porto will look to go top of Group B when they welcome Atletico Madrid to Portugal on Tuesday.

After beginning their UCL campaign with two consecutive losses to Club Brugge and Atletico Madrid, Sergio Conceicao’s side regrouped impressively, winning three games on the bounce to seal a place in the next round.

Their last UCL outing was a 4-0 win over Club Brugge gives them the opportunity to win this group as long as they win this game and Bayer Leverkusen gets a point against Club Brugge.

They will be desperate to keep their own side of the bargain, as that could also relegate Atletico Madrid to the bottom of the table. There will be probably nothing more pleasing to the Porto fans than to see their team win the group and send Diego Simeone’s men out of Europe as the Spanish side sent Porto crashing out of the UCL last year in an ill-tempered game that saw Porto receive two red cards.

However, Porto have a poor record against Atletico having lost four of the last five meetings between both sides (D1). the hosts also had a poor result over the weekend and come into this tie off the back of a 1-1 draw with Santa Clara on Saturday, a result that leaves them in second position in Portugal’s top flight, eight points behind the leaders Benfica.

Possible Porto starting line-up

Diogo Costa; Pepê, Fabio Cardoso, David Carmo, Zaidu Sanusi; Otávio, Bruno Costa, Andrés Mateus Uribe, Wenderson Galeno; Evanilson, Mehdi Tarem.

Injured: Pepe, Joao Mario

Doubtful: None

Atletico Madrid

It has been a bad week for Atletico Madrid who followed up their first exit from the UCL in the group stage in five years with another disappointing result in La Liga over the weekend.

Diego Simeone’s men suffered a 3-2 loss to relegation candidates Cadiz on Saturday, leaving their unlikely title quest in tatters as they are now nine points behind Real Madrid who occupy the top spot.

In an entertaining game at the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla, Cadiz took the lead in the first minute of the game through Theo Bongonda. Alex doubled the lead for the hosts in the 81st minute, but Atletico fought back to level the game 2-2 through a Joao Felix brace.

However, just when they thought they had escaped with a point, Rojiblancos were dealt a huge blow in the eighth minute of added time when Ruben Sobrino scored for Cadiz.

The result means that Atletico have won just one of their last four games (D2, L1) increasing the pressure on Simeone, who could be facing the sack after over a decade at the club. With Rojiblancos reportedly set to sell some players in January due to the fact that they will lose €15-20 million in revenue for missing out on the UCL, qualifying for the Europa League will at least serve as a cushion for the cash-strapped club.

And so, the visitors will come into this tie desperate to get a win that could book their place in the next round of the Europa League as long as Bayer Leverkusen drop points against Club Brugge.

Possible Atletico Madrid starting line-up

Jan Oblak; Nahuel Molina Lucero, Stefan Savic, Reinildo Mandava, Saúl Ñíguez; Rodrigo De Paul, Matheus Cunha, Axel Witsel, Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco; Ángel Correa, João Felix.

Injured: Alvaro Morata, Koke, Marcos Llorente, Thomas Lemar, Geoffrey Kondogbia

Doubtful: None
