Marseille 2-0 Dijon: Balerdi, Gonzalez score as the hosts push for European qualification

Ligue 1 opener postponed after Marseille confirmed 4 COVID-19 cases

Marseille picked up a 2-0 win over Dijon in the French League earlier tonight.

Les Olympiens have been in mediocre form coming into this game and Jorge Sampaoli will be pleased with the way his side performed tonight.

Marseille had lost three of the last five matches across all competitions and they were under pressure to pick up all three points tonight especially with European qualification at stake.

Leonardo Balerdi scored the opening goal of the game at the stroke of half time and Alvaro Gonzalez wrapped up the scoring in the 79th minute.

Dijon have been in abysmal form coming into this game and they are at the bottom of the French League right now. Despite their recent run of form, Marseille were clearly favourites heading into this contest and the fans will be delighted to see that the players have stepped up and managed to secure the win.

Dijon have lost their last 12 games across all competitions and with just seven matches left in the League, it seems highly unlikely that they will be able to beat relegation.

The visitors are 15 points away from safety and they will need a miraculous turnaround to preserve their status in Ligue 1 next season.

The likes of Jordan Amavi, Yuto Nagatomo and Valentin Rongier missed the game through injury and star defender Duje Caleta-car was suspended.

Marseille fans can be proud of the performance despite the side being without several key players.

It will be interesting to see if Marseille can build on this and finish the season strongly now.
