Manchester United snatched 2-1 victory in their group league opener against last-time finalist Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes.
PSG started as the favourite, as they had an impeccable record at home. They only lost seven out of 53 UEFA Champions League matches, and they did not lose more than one game against a single team.
PSG boss Thomas Tuchel made five changes to their squad that played against Nimes and started with Mbappe, Neymar and de Maria at front. Apart from Angel de Maria, other former Manchester United United player Herrera started against his old team.
Manchester United made three changes, and Axel Tuanzebe replaced captain Harry Maguire in defence. Ole Gunnar Solskjær handed Bruno Fernandez captain’s armband.
Bruno Fernandez converted a penalty kick to put Manchester United ahead at 23rd minute, as Anthony Martial was tripped at the penalty area by Abdou Diallo. Though the first attempt was saved by three times Champions League winner Keylor Navas, the referee ordered retake of the spot-kick as VAR suggested that Navas was out of the line before the spot-kick was taken.
Manchester United captain showed a lot of character as he calmly placed the second attempt through the other side of Navas. It’s more significant as Bruno missed a penalty kick in the previous match against Newcastle.
PSG created lots of chances, but they could not beat David de Gea, who saved his team on many occasions. There were only two occasions, in one of them Anthony Martial scored an own goal from a Neymar corner. In another occasion, Mbappe hit the bar.
Keylor Navas also had an almost perfect day, till 87th minute, when Marcus Rashford attempt from the top of the box found back of the net. Paul Pogba, who replaced Allex Telles at 67th minute, made the assist for United’s second goal.
Axel Tuanzebe had a great day on the field, as he effectively nullified Kylian Mbappe in few occasions. After conceding the first goal, PSG dominated the match with 61% possession, but Ole’s boys looked determined and fought back at the right time.
