Arsenal defender David Luiz is all set to leave the London-based club this summer. The player’s contract expires soon and the Gunners have not handed him an extension.

Now the player has confirmed that he wishes to finish his career in Benfica and he has already spoken to the Portuguese club’s president Luis Filipe Vieira about it.

He said: “I already spoke with Vieira about the return. My dream is to end my career at Benfica. When, I don’t know, but it will happen… it will, if president Vieira allows me and if the fans want me to come back. It will be one of the most beautiful moments of my career.”

It will be interesting to see if Benfica sign him this summer.

Luiz is in his 30s and he won’t be a starter for a top Premier League side. It is better for him to move to the weaker leagues and Benfica would be ideal for him.

He will get to play more often and the pressure to perform is a lot less than at Arsenal.

Furthermore, the quality of attackers in the league is not as high as the Premier League either. Luiz should be able to cope with ease.

Arsenal must look to invest in young talented defenders and build for the future.

Luiz has done well in English football with Chelsea and Arsenal and it is no surprise that he wants to return to the club where his European adventure began.

Benfica helped him develop as a player and he will be keen on repaying them with his performances once again.

It will be interesting to see if the deal works out in the coming months.
