Bournemouth are considering legal action against the Premier League’s hawk-eye technology after an error from the system allowed Aston Villa to stay up and sent them packing to the Championship.

The Villans received a favourable decision against Sheffield United when Nyland handled a Blades freekick into his own net.

However, the incident was not caught on camera properly and Villa were let off. Had the goal been given, Bournemouth would have been playing Premier League football next season and Aston Villa would have gone down.

It will be interesting to see if they make a legal move after consultation.

The relegation has not only cost them their place in the Premier League, they are set to lose millions in revenue as well.

Furthermore, relegation could lead to a mass exodus as well.

It remains to be see how the saga unfolds in the coming months.

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith claims that Villa have been at the receiving end of poor decisions in the past and these things are a part and parcel of the game.

He said: “Go watch the 94th minute at Crystal Palace. Things happen. Referee Kevin Friend has blown a whistle when we have scored a goal. It should have been a penalty or a goal. We got neither.”

Sports lawyer Nick De Marco QC told: “Such a claim might be unprecedented but, depending on all the circumstances, it could be a good claim.”
