Leicester City close in on Premier League top spot with a win over Southampton

James Maddison-Leicester City

Leicester City picked up a 2-0 win over Southampton in the Premier League earlier tonight.

James Maddison scored the opening goal of the game for Leicester City on the 37th minute after collecting a pass from Youri Tielemans and finding the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Southampton fought back immediately and they could have scored twice but Kasper Schmeichel did exceedingly well to deny the likes of Che Adams and Ryan Bertrand.

The visitors were unlucky once again and Stuart Armstrong struck the crossbar.

Meanwhile, Leicester could have doubled their advantage in the second half but Jan Bednarek did well to clear a shot from Harvey Barnes off his goal line.

The Leicester City winger did manage to get his goal in the end to double his side’s advantage. Barnes was sent clean through by Tielemans and he slotted the ball past Alex McCarthy to secure all three points for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The win tonight leaves Leicester City second in the Premier League table with 35 points and they are now unbeaten in five League games. They are now above Premier League champions Liverpool in the table and they will be hoping to close the gap with Manchester United in the coming weeks now. The Red Devils are one point ahead of the Foxes.

Meanwhile, Southampton are eighth in the table with 29 points and they will be disappointed to have come away empty-handed despite producing a reasonably good display.
