Newcastle 0-2 Arsenal: Aubameyang back in starting XI with a goal, Elneny scores his first

The Gunners picked up a clinical win against Newcastle United, with Aubameyang scoring a sublime goal in the second half.

Arsenal returned to winning ways after beating Newcastle United 2-0 away, with Elneny and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finding the score sheet.

The Gunners were coming on the back of the Europa League defeat against Villarreal, and their worrying Premier League form this season added more pressure to manager Mikel Arteta.

Arteta rested the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Nicolas Pepe and Thomas Partey and gave starts to Gabriel Martinelli and Mohamed Elneny, with the latter finding the breakthrough inside five minutes.

The Egyptian international arrived at the right time to meet Hector Bellerin’s cross, which missed Aubameyang in the process.

Perhaps, the Gabonese striker showed signs of rustiness in the first half as he missed another chance from close range.

Newcastle, who found themselves on the backfoot for the larger parts of the game, had their best chance when Allan Saint-Maximin’s deflected shot forced a shot from Gunners goalkeeper Mathew Ryan.

Aubameyang made it up for first-half sluggishness by doubling the lead for the visitors in a stunning fashion, and the assist was equally brilliant from Martinelli.

Aubameyang has scored in each of his last five appearances against Newcastle in all competitions – He is the first Arsenal player to score in five consecutive matches against an opponent since Giroud netted in six straight against Aston Villa between 2013-2016.

Things got worse for the Magpies when substitute Fabian Schar was shown a straight red for his horrible foul on Martinelli, and it also meant the last big action of the game as Arteta’s side wrapped up three points.

Although the win hasn’t stirred a big change in the Premier League table for the Gunner, it could still hand them enough momentum ahead of the second leg against Villarreal.

Owen Hargreaves: “I like Elneny - he gives Arsenal something different. He’s more rugged but I think this Arsenal team needs that. If he can add goals too, that’s the icing on the cake.” #afc
Aubameyang on the win: "We needed this one I think. After a few games without winning it was important ahead of our game on Thursday. It was a great goal. [Martinelli] did incredible work today & he gave me this assist. All credit to him. I was really happy to be back" #Arsenal
