Premier League trio to battle out for Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng

Jerome Boateng-Bayern Munich

The German has entered the final year of his contract at Allianz Arena.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham are all set to battle for Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng, whose contract ends next summer.

According to reports, Bayern have decided not to renew Boateng’s deal, which has led the Premier League trio to enter the race.

Although Boateng is eager for a contract extension, the Bavarians are not feeling the same way about it, as they do with his fellow defender David Alaba.

Boateng said,  ‘I can imagine [signing a contract extension].

My children feel at home here. With Hansi Flick as coach and this team, it’s a lot of fun. ‘In the end, I’m happy to still be with Bayern. I’m enjoying football again.’

Arsenal, who were understood to be interested in signing Boateng this summer, would try their luck this time.

The 32-year-old was also a target of Chelsea before Frank Lampard decided to sign Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva. Another London club Tottenham could also move for Boateng as Jose Mourinho wants to reinforce the defence.

One of the reasons for Bayern’s reluctance to extend the German’s contract is due to the reported interest in Leipzig’s highly-rated defender Dayot Upamecano.

Boateng has become an integral part of the Bavarians in the last decade since joining them from Manchester City.

Although he experienced a slight downfall, Boateng has been restored to his best under the current Bayern manager Hansi Flick.

The German defender could be valuable for any of the three English clubs given his experience and quality.
