Al-Khelaifi takes over at ECA

Paris Saint-Germain chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi has now been appointed as the chairman of the European Club Association.

Al-Khelaifi replaces the Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli who stepped down as the ECA president on Sunday.

Juventus announced their participation in the European Super League at the weekend, and therefore, Agnelli had to step down from his position as the ECA chief. He could not have continued in his role at the ECA when his club was going to quit the European club association.

The appointment of the Qatari businessman as the chief of ECA has raised eyebrows once again.

The PSG supremo has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the Champions League, and he is the chairman of the beIN Media Group as well.

Furthermore, he is also a member of the Club World Cup organising committee and a close ally of UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin. There will be a consensus that the appointment reeks of favouritism.

Following his appointment as the ECA chief, Al-Khelaifi said: “I am honoured and humbled to have been appointed by my fellow ECA Executive Board Members as Chairman.

“The leadership, integrity and togetherness of our organisation has never been more required than at this pivotal moment in European football. I will provide my unconditional commitment to the entire football community: that means to all ECA Member Clubs from every European nation and to the fans and communities they represent.

“I, alongside all my fellow ECA Board Members and Clubs, am looking to reinforce ECA in its role as the legitimate and singular voice of Europe’s clubs. Our game, adored by generations of supporters, will only prosper under unity, and it is our duty as the custodians of football to fulfil this obligation.”

UEFA sanctions on the way for 12 ESL clubs

Meanwhile, UEFA have confirmed that the 12 founding members of the European Super League will face the consequences for their decision to form the breakaway tournament.

Apparently, the UEFA vice president has revealed that proper sanctions will be handed out to the responsible clubs.

The other participants of the UEFA Champions League competition are demanding punishments for the 12 ESL clubs. It will be interesting to see what consequences await the 12 founding members of the European Super League.

UEFA says the 12 founding ESL clubs WILL face consequences, the first will be “they will live with shame" with proper sanctions to come, the Vice President confirms. Several big clubs are asking the UEFA for sanctions for the 12.
