Napoli 5-2 Lazio: Insigne and Mertens combine to hammer Lazio

Lorenzo Insigne-Napoli

Napoli won a seven-goal thriller against Lazio to move closer to top-four.

Napoli have battered Lazio 6-2 in a crucial Serie A game, which saw them getting closer to the top-four.

Both sides were desperate for a win to keep their hopes alive in the top-four race, and especially, Lazio had a six-match unbeaten run prior to the game.

Napoli were on front inside seven minutes when Lorenzo Insigne scored a penalty, and Matteo Politano followed up the home side’s second goal.

Lazio had some decent chances in the first half but failed to make the most of it.

The Neapolitan kept the momentum following the breaking, with skipper Insigne completing his brace by scoring a brilliant goal.

Dries Mertens added more pressure to the visitors after scoring the fourth, which marked the Belgian’s 102 in Serie A and equalled Antonio Vojak’s record – the top scorer for Napoli in Serie A history.

Lazio intended to make a comeback after back to back goals from Ciro Immobile and Sergej Milenkovic-Savic. Still, Napoli killed off the game after Victor Osimhen scored the fifth goal.

After drawing with leaders Inter Milan last weekend, Napoli have now picked up an emphatic win to move to fifth place, only two points behind Juventus.

Gennaro Gattuso’s men have enjoyed a late surge this season, which would keep their top-four hopes alive.

Elsewhere, Lazio had their winning run halted by Napoli, and the defeat leaves them sixth in the table, five points by the Neapolitans with a game left in hand.
