Serie A title race: Milan, Inter, Juventus started with different fates after ESL drama

Lukaku and Martinez celebrating Inter goal against Atalanta

European Super League might have got everyone’s attention over the last two days, but fortunately, the menacing project, as many call it, did not drag for long; and it’s time for some action on the field. Serie A is nearing the business end, and the race for the top four is like none before. Here is how the Serie A race has unfolded after the ESL drama.

Inter are the favourites despite Spezia draw

It has been a disappointing last two games in Serie A for leaders Inter Milan as they drew both of them, with the latest one coming against Spezia. On both occasions, many weaknesses surfaced: Lukaku’s inefficiency in front of goal and the not-so-good defence. However, they are way ahead of the pack, currently 10 points clear at the top. With only six games remaining and tricky opponents awaiting, like Roma and Juventus, Inter are the favourites to lift the title.

Milan, Juventus and Atalanta- all eyes are in second place

With only one point separating each of AC Milan, Juventus and Atalanta, the battle between these three will be thrilling to watch. Milan have clearly slumped of late, losing the ascendancy they had at one point, and now their latest defeat against Sassuolo has added more misery. Yet, they are second in the table with 66 points, one point ahead of Juventus.

As far as Juve are concerned, it has been a whirlwind season compared to the prior seasons. Most importantly, they are on course to lose the dominance they held over the last decade in Serie A. Life has been so tricky for Andrea Pirlo in his debut season as he witnessed another fiasco for Juve in the Champions League. In their last game, the Bianconeri conceded a shock lead to Parma but managed to turn things around. Whether Pirlo would save his job for next season or not is a different context, the former midfielder would look to push for second place.

Atalanta enjoyed a late surge this season, which saw them jump into the top four race without any prior warning. Once again, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have shown that they can’t be written off until the end, no matter how their form might look. Their narrow win against Juventus in their last game has handed them huge confidence, and they are set for a three-way battle with Juventus and Milan for second place.

The fierce top-four battle between Lazio, Napoli and Roma

As mentioned before, the scudetto race will be more exciting this season, with LazioNapoli and Roma competing for the top-four spot.

Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli hasn’t been much convincing this season, yet they are in a firm position to seal a spot in the top four.

Lazio’s upturn in form has seen them win their last five games on the trot, including some nail-biting finishes against Spezia and Verona. With a game in hand, the Biancocelesti are two points behind Napoli, and if they manage to win their next game, they can climb to fifth place.

Roma are currently seventh in the table with 54 points, and if they manage to win the remainder of the games.
