Toby Alderweireld has signed a new contract with the Tottenham Hotspur until 2023.

The central defender from Wilrijk, Belgium, joined Tottenham Hotspur from Atletico Madrid in July, 2015, and has made 179 appearances for Spurs in all competitions.

A mainstay of back line, Toby played in 50 of our 58 matches last season, starting 12 of 13 in our run to the Champions League Final. So far this term, he’s started 16 of our 17 games in the Premier League.

On the international stage, Toby is fast approaching a century of caps having represented Belgium on 98 occasions so far and continues to excel for his country, playing regularly alongside Spurs team-mate Jan Vertonghen. He has featured in two World Cups (2014, 2018) and Euro 2016, while he was part of a Belgium side that has conceded just three goals in 10 qualifiers on the way to next summer’s Euro 2020 finals.

Jan Vertonghen has taken to Instagram to record a story featuring his compatriot and fellow defender Toby Alderweireld.

The Instagram post also included a pen and money bag emoji, with Alderweireld’s wages reportedly tripled from £50,000-a-week to £150,000 as a result of his fresh terms.

He becomes the second player aged 30 to earn a lucrative long-term deal this season after Moussa Sissoko also extended his stay in north London.

It represents a shift in policy from owner Daniel Levy and increases speculation that Vertonghen, 31, will join his fellow Belgium defender in signing a new contract.

Christian Eriksen’s contract also expires in the summer, however the Danish playmaker has reportedly told Spurs he will not be penning a new deal.
