Sporting Lisbon

After winning their first two UEFA Champions League game to sit top of Group D, many tipped Sporting Lisbon to win their group.

However, five games into the UCL campaign, the hosts are in danger of missing out completely unless they can muster a win in this game. They have failed to win any of their last three UCL games, with a 1-1 draw with Tottenham the last of those results.

However, they remain in contention for a top-of-a-table finish given that they are just one point behind Antonio Conte’s Spurs.

But Rúben Amorim’s men come into this tie in poor form, with a 1-0 loss to Arouca at the weekend meaning that the Lions have now won just one of their last five games in all competitions (D1, L3).

Yet, they remain solid at home, with a 2-0 loss to Marseille as their only loss in their last five home games (W4). And so, they will welcome Frankfurt to Estádio José Alvalade, hoping to pick up a fifth home win in the last six.

However, a visit from a Bundesliga side is hardly likely to restore confidence among the home fans either, as Sporting have won just four of their 29 meetings with German opposition (D6, L19), albeit one of those a 3-0 success in the reverse fixture.

Possible Sporting Lisbon starting line-up

Frankfurt

Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt will be looking to record back-to-back wins for the first time since 1959/60 in the UCL when they travel to Lisbon on Wednesday.

The visitors beat Marseille 2-1 last time out to keep them in third place in the UCL group, level on points with Sporting. And so they need a win to secure a place in the knockout round.

But Oliver Glasner’s men were beaten at the weekend, as Jude Bellingham’s strike condemned the Eagles to a 1-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, preventing them from climbing into the Bundesliga’s top four. The loss ended a four-game-winning run for Frankfurt, who will be hoping that their away form will help them here.

The Eagles have lost just two away games across all competitions so far this season (W6, D1) and will fancy their chances of winning a third away game in a row.

Possible Frankfurt starting line-up

Kevin Trapp; Kristijan Jakic, Tuta, Evan N’Dicka; Eric Ebimbe, Luca Pellegrini, Daichi Kamada, Djibril Sow; Jesper Lindstroem, Mario Götze; Randal Kolo Muani.

Injured: Christopher Lenz, Makoto Hasebe, Ansgar Knauff
