Portugal have officially sacked head coach Fernando Santos after he failed to lead his country past the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
The 68-year-old had been the Seleccao boss for eight years but will no longer continue in his role after being let go due to Portugal’s apparent failure in Qatar, where they crashed out in the quarter-final stage after a 1-0 loss to Morocco.
During his eight-year spell in the national team, Santos famously led Portugal to European Championships success in 2016 and later won UEFA’s inaugural Nations League in 2018-19.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) are looking to hire a replacement for Santos and have identified Lille coach Paulo Fonseca as the man to lead the new generation of Portugal players. The FPF are also considering AS Roma’s Jose Mourinho if the latest rumours are to be believed.
