Portugal

Portugal will look to get back to winning ways when they face Switzerland at the Lusail stadium on Tuesday.

The European heavyweights were beaten 2-1 by South Korea in their final group game, albeit they still won their group ahead of South Korea, Ghana and Uruguay.

They have expelled the bad memories of a disastrous group-stage exit in Brazil in 2014 with their Portugal embarking on consecutive appearances in the knockout stages of the World Cup for only the second time in their history (2006, 2010).

However, Fernando Santos’ men must learn from past mistakes, considering the last two times Portugal made it past the group stage at the World Cup (2010 and 2018), their journey immediately ended in the Round of 16.

But this side can become history makers, as only once since 1966 have they reached the last eight, and they did so after winning their group.

Switzerland

Switzerland survived the World Cup group that had Brazil, Serbia and Cameroon thanks to a record of two wins and a narrow loss in their group games.

The Red Crosses began their group games with a 1-0 win over Cameroon, before suffering a narrow 1-0 loss to tournament favourites Brazil in their second group game.

They now beat fierce rivals Serbia in their last game in an ill-tempered game that ended 3-2 in their favour thanks to goals from Xherdan Shaqiri, Breel Embolo and Remo Freuler. The result means they finished second to Brazil on goal difference in their group. ,

Having secured passage to this round of the tournament for the third time in a row, they will now aim to finally end a run of four straight defeats when they’ve reached this stage.

Speaking after their win over Serbia, coach Murat Yakin said that the only regret was “the one goal” they needed to win the group, before adding, “we’ll gladly take on Portugal with the ambition to worry them as much as possible”.

‘La Nati’ have shown in the past that they can trouble the Portuguese, having won their recent H2H meeting 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League last June, as well as the only prior match played in a major competition – a 2-0 victory in the group stage of Euro 2008.

However, after two group-stage wins, Yakin and his men will have to break records if they are to continue their World Cup journey, as the Swiss have never won three matches in a single World Cup finals campaign.

Possible Switzerland starting line-up

Gregor Kobel, Silvan Widmer, Fabian Schär, Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodriguez, Remo Freuler, Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri, Djibril Sow, Ruben Vargas, Breel Embolo.
