Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy could be on his way out of Chelsea after the World Cup, according to reports.
The Senegal international is contemplating a possible exit from the club after falling down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
Mendy joined Chelsea from Rennes in a deal worth £22million in 2020 and was an instant success, helping the club to the Champions League in his debut season.
However, the 30-year-old’s position as the undisputed No 1 at Chelsea has been thrown into doubt following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel and the arrival of current head coach Graham Potter.
Mendy lost his place to Kepa Arrizabalaga, who started Graham Potter’s reign as Chelsea’s first choice as Mendy was suffering with a knee injury during that period.
But since returning to the side after Kepa suffered a foot injury, the Senegal international has not been in good form. He has started the Blue’s previous four matches, three of which the team have lost, leading to the belief that his time as Chelsea’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper is over.
While he remains hopeful that he can convince the manager that he deserves to reclaim his position as No 1, there are fears that the Chelsea boss has already decided that Arrizabalaga – fitness permitting – will start as first-choice once the Premier League resumes next month.
According to Sportsmail, Potter has already moved on from Mendy and is keen on bringing Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to Stamford Bridge to provide competition for Mendy.
And so Mendy is already on the lookout for a new club and will put himself in the shop window at the World Cup where he is expected to be Senegal’s first-choice keeper in Qatar.
Although according to the report there seems little chance of Chelsea sanctioning any sale for Mendy in January, however a decision on his future is likely to be made by the summer considering he will enter the final two years of his contract at the end of the season.
Chelsea have held talks with Mendy over an extension but have been unable to reach an agreement and the uncertainty over his place in Potter’s plans will unlikely to accelerate hopes of a resolution.
