Everton

Everton will look to pick up their first win of the Premier League season when they welcome old foes Liverpool to Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Toffees were denied their first win of the season last time out as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Leeds United. In an entertaining game at Elland Road, Frank Lampard’s side took the lead early in the game through Anthony Gordon. But a second-half strike by Luis Sinisterra cancelled off their goal and ensured that their quest for their first win of the season continued into matchday six.

The result also extended Everton’s unbeaten run in the Premier League to seven games, following their 5-1 loss to Arsenal on the last day of the previous season.

Having started the season with two losses, three draws from their last three league games represent some improvement for Lampard’s side. But nothing will make them happier than to build on their improvement of recent weeks and get their first win of the season against their old foes.

And so, they will welcome Liverpool eager to prove a point and end their winless run against Liverpool which has lasted for 12 years (D8, L3).

Liverpool

Liverpool will look to make it three league wins in three games when they play Everton on Saturday.

The Reds came from a goal down to register a 2-1 win over Newcastle in their last game. In a dramatic game at Anfield, Liverpool fell behind in the first half when new signing Alexander Isak bundled home his first Newcastle goal since joining the Magpies in a record deal. Despite controlling the bulk of the ball possession, Liverpool could not break a stubborn Newcastle defence until after the hour mark when Roberto Firmino struck from outside the box to level the scores.

But the high point of the match came in the eighth minute of added time when Fabio Carvalho pounced on a loose ball at the back post to snatch all three points for Liverpool with the last kick of the game.

With Arsenal and Manchester City both winning their games, a loss would have effectively ended Liverpool’s chances in the title race. But the win means that Klopp’s men come into this tie with a realistic chance of still winning the title at the end of 38 weeks.

They come into this tie sitting seven points behind table toppers Arsenal and five points behind defending champions Manchester City. So they will be desperate to win this game to ensure that they remain within touching distance of the teams at the top of the table.
