Gary Neville believes that Manchester City would have won Liverpool on Sunday had they signed Harry Kane in the summer.
Pep Guardiola’s side dominated Liverpool in the first half of their Premier League clash at Anfield. But they could not take their chances and only settled for a comeback draw in the second half.
The ‘Cityzens’ were desperate to sign Harry Kane in the summer, but could not agree on a price with Tottenham Hotspur chairperson Daniel Levy. The England captain is yet to score in the league this season and has looked unhappy in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
Despite his poor return of goals, Neville still believes that Kane would have been able to replace the goals of the now-departed Sergio Aguero. The Argentine was City’s main striker for ten years but was not replaced when he left for Barcelona in the summer. And Neville says failure to replace him is hindering City.
“This City team are special,” the former Manchester United right-back told Sky Sports.
“There is one thing that stands in their way, everybody in the league knows it, everybody in Manchester knows it: Have they got that ruthless cutting edge?
“In the first half (at Anfield) they should have been out of sight. Will that cost them come January and the end of the season, will they fall short because they haven’t got that striker who is going to get those 25 – 30 goals?
“They didn’t quite go all the way for Kane, but they’ve done that before with Alexis Sanchez. They had a threshold and didn’t go past it. But have a Plan B, you’d expect with a club like City to have got somebody else lined up, even as a temporary measure.
“I know Guardiola loves the idea of playing with a team of midfielders, but there is that doubt that only exists because of the lack of a striker.
“If City had Kane, I’m telling you now this league is done. Forget the form Kane is in now or what he’s doing at Spurs. He amongst that group of City players is taking a chance in that first half. He’s gold.”
Despite dominating the game, City had to rely on goals from Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne to earn them a point after Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah had given the Anfield side the lead.
