Leeds United

Over almost a month without footballing action, Leeds United will look to get their third win of the season when they host Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Whites have been out of action since losing 5-2 to Brentford in Round six of the 2022/23 Premier League season. The result was their second loss of the season and extended their winless run in the league to three games (D1, L2).

After starting the season with three wins and a draw in their opening four games, things have gone slightly sore for Jesse Marsch’s side with the American even set to be absent in this game after picking up a touchline ban for his conduct during the 5-2 defeat to Brentford at the start of September.

The former Leipzig and Salzburg coach will have to watch from the stands as his side finally return to action after nearly a month without a game that was caused by a couple of postponements and the international break.

His side will be happy to return to action at a packed-out Elland Road though given that they have enjoyed success at this ground recently. Since losing 3-0 to Aston Villa in what was Marsch’s first home game in charge of Leeds, the Yorkshire side have been beaten just twice in nine matches at Elland Road (W4, D3).

However, there remain some concerns over a defence who have kept only one clean sheet in their last 15 home league matches. But with both teams scoring on nine occasions, Leeds home games certainly don’t lack entertainment.

Possible Leeds United starting line-up

Illan Meslier; Cody Drameh, Diego Llorente, Robin Koch, Pascal Struijk; Tyler Adams, Marc Roca; Brenden Aaronson, Jack Harrison, Luis Sinisterra; Daniel James.

Injured: Junior Firpo, Stuart Dallas, Rodrigo Moreno

Doubtful: Nissen Kristensen

Suspended: None

Aston Villa

Aston Villa will look to make it two league wins in a row for the first time since Steven Gerrard’s early reign as manager when they travel to Yorkshire on Sunday.

The visitors have endured a poor start to the season having lost four of their opening seven games of the season (W2, D1) while scoring just six times. So far, only struggling Wolves (3), West Ham (3) and Everton (5) have scored fewer goals than Gerrard’s men, who come into this round of games sitting in 15th place, three points ahead of the relegation teams.

While it is still early days to panic, Gerrard knows that his side must pick up points more regularly if he is to remain in his job for long. They will travel to Elland Road with a lot more confidence” according to manager Steven Gerrard after seeing his side record their first clean sheet in 12 league games following their 1-0 win at Southampton last time out.

However, the visitors have a huge problem on their road trips, given they have lost four successive PL away games, despite scoring the opening goal in defeats to Manchester City (3-2) and Crystal Palace (3-1).

Perhaps those hopes of ending that losing streak will be boosted from a return to Elland Road where Villa have lost only once in ten top-flight games (W4, D5) since 1995.

Possible Aston Villa starting line-up

Emi Martinez; Ashley Young, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Ludwig Augustinsson; John McGinn, Jacob Ramsey, Douglas Luiz; Philippe Coutinho, Leon Bailey; Ollie Watkins.

Injured: Diego Carlos, Matty Cash, Lucas Digne, Boubacar Kamara, Jan Bednarek

Doubtful: None

Suspended: None
