Manchester United are reportedly making a final push to sign Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of next season.
The Portuguese international is one of the primary transfer targets for new manager Erik ten Hag, who is looking to rebuild the club’s midfield this summer. Man United midfield is one of the major areas of the team that need fixing, with the expected departure of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic freeing up room for new additions.
And ahead of the summer, United have identified Neves as the man to bring the creativity and dynamism needed to improve the team.
The midfielder’s contract with Wolves runs until 2024, but the West Midlands club’s attempts to renew it have been met with a cold shoulder. And so, the club are reluctantly looking to let him go this summer but for a transfer fee of £50m.
According to The Sun, Neves has been on Manchester United’s radar for 12 months with ex-boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the first to instigate the club’s interest in the player.
According to the report, the Red Devils reportedly saw a £35m bid turned down in January for the player, with Wolves seemingly holding out for a much bigger fee than that offered by the Red Devils.
But with the new manager eager to improve a Man United side that finished in sixth place in Premier League this season, the club are expected to pay up the sum demanded by Bruno Lage’s side. And so, the Old Trafford club are expected to begin talks with Neves’ agent in the next few weeks.
But Manchester United’s issue is that with no Champions League football and the club needing a significant rebuild, they have competition for targets with Barcelona also in the race for Neves.
