The AS Roma boss has been linked with the managerial role at the Nigerian national team.
Jose Mourinho is said to be interested in becoming the new head coach of the Nigerian national team.
Nigeria have recently sacked long-standing German manager Gernot Rohr and replaced him with Augustine Eguavoen.
However, Eguavoen’s spell could be a fleeting one as the Super Eagles are keen on appointing a new head coach ahead of the African Cup of Nations in January.
Mourinho turns out to be one of the shocking candidates, with the Super Eagles’ president Amaju Pinnick claiming that they have held talks with the Portuguese boss over the head coach role.
Pinnick said (h/t Mirror): “The emphasis on the new coach is discipline. We will look at his antecedents on discipline,”
“Secondly, we will also look at how hungry he is to win trophies because if they are hungry it supersedes so many things and if he wants to win he will instil discipline.
“We will look at all these things but I cannot make a pronouncement emphatically because I will be undermining my executive committee.
“So, until my executive committee comes out within the next week or so to say this is the name because the technical committee has to bring their presentation to the executive committee. It is going to be a seamless movement to the current team headed by Eguavoen.
“But we have spoken to three top coaches and [Jose] Peseiro, whose name has been going around, is one of the coaches and I can tell you he is a top coach.
“Of course Mourinho, I am not going to tell you we didn’t talk to Mourinho because we did and the (sports) minister also talked to Mourinho and there is nothing wrong with it.”
It is quite surprising to see Mourinho’s name on the list, as he only became the manager of AS Roma last summer.
The former Tottenham boss has been impressive in his debut season at Stadio Olimpico, with Giallorossi currently sitting sixth in the Serie A table and have also progressed to the knockouts of the Europa Conference League.
The 58-year-old hasn’t managed a national team in a career spanning more than two decades.
