Tottenham are reportedly far from agreeing on a contract extension with head coach Antonio Conte.

The North London club have been keen on tying the Italian to a long-term contract before the Premier League resumes next week. But according to Sportsmail, their attempts are set to fail despite presenting a £1 million-a-year pay rise to Conte.

The former Inter Milan and Chelsea coach has made it clear he is not in a hurry to commit to a new and improved deal in North London.

Spurs had talked with Conte during the World Cup to extend his deal, which expires at the end of this season and contains an option for one more year. But an agreement has yet to be reached, and there are now fears he could walk away from the Spurs project soon.

The 53-year-old Italian has a history of walking out on clubs once he feels he’s not getting enough support from the leadership. He walked out on both Inter Milan and Juventus because he was concerned about their commitment to improving the squad.

And in this case, he may leave, mainly as his wife and daughter are still based in Italy.

However, Conte remains hugely popular with fans after leading Spurs back into the Champions League. His side sits fourth in the Premier League table after 15 games this season.
