Spain 0-0 Portugal: What were the key indications from both teams ahead of Euro 2020?

Cristiano Ronaldo pokes fun at Bruno Fernandes

Spain and Portugal played out a goalless draw in a high profile international friendly earlier this week.

The clash was expected to be a thrilling contest between two international heavyweights, but it ended up being a disappointing draw.

With the European Championships just a week away, we look at some of the key takeaways for both teams.

Portugal have an exceptional attack, but the players need to gel on the pitch

The defending champions started with an attacking trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Felix and Diogo Jota against Spain, but they looked disjointed throughout the game.

It is evident that the three players have not played together a lot, and they will have to gel better in order for the attack to succeed during the European Championships.

On paper, the Portuguese front trio has flair, goals, finishing and creativity, but they struggled against a well organized Spanish defence.

Spain’s goalkeeping department could prove to be a major issue

Unai Simon was given the nod ahead of David De Gea, and Robert Sanchez against Portugal and the Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper looked quite nervy throughout the game.

The 23-year-old might start ahead of De Gea as the country’s number one goalkeeper because of the Manchester United star’s dip in form, and he will have to improve a lot before the European Championships.

The Spanish defence seems quite impressive

Luis Enrique’s side were well organized at the back against Portugal, and they could have an impressive summer tournament if they can continue to perform like the way they did earlier this week.

The likes of Aymeric Laporte I recently switched international allegiance, and the Manchester City defender was quite impressive against Portugal.

Meanwhile, Enrique decided to field Marcos Llorente as his right back, and the midfielder excelled in an unfamiliar position. The likes of Carvajal/Vazquez have been left out of the squad, and therefore Spain will need Llorente to step up as right-winger in the European championship.
