Serie A
History
The Scudetto and Coppa Campioni d’Italia are awarded to the winner of Serie A, a professional league competition for football clubs at the top of the Italian football league structure. From the 1929–30 season onwards, the Italian Football Championship was changed from having regional and interregional rounds to a single-tier league.
The Serie A football league is one of the most illustrious in the world. Juventus, Milan, and Internazionale are three of the world’s most successful clubs, all founding members of the G-14, a party that comprised the largest and most prestigious European football clubs from 2000 to 2008.
Format
Historically, the number of clubs was 16-18. Currently, 20 teams participate during a season, and each of the teams faces all the opponents twice, in the home and away matches. A total of 38 games are played, and they rank based on total points, goal differential and goals scored are used to rate teams. Teams are considered to be in the same place if they are all equal. A play-off match at a neutral site determines rank if there is a tie for the title, promotion, or qualification to other competitions.
