RB Leipzig

Leipzig will go gunning for their fifth straight win in all competitions when they take on Freiburg at the Red Bull Arena.

Die Roten Bullen have been in sensational form in recent weeks after enduring a poor start to the season.

They signed off a successful Champions League group stages where they finished second with an impressive 0-4 win over Shakhtar Donetsk last Wednesday. Goals from Christopher Nkunku, Andre Silva, Dominik Szoboszlai and an own goal from Valeriy Bondar ensured that the home side made it into the knockout rounds of the UEFA competition where they will now face Manchester City.

Marco Rose has made an impressive start to his tenure at Leipzig since replacing Domenico Tedesco and has taken the club from a place in midtable where he found to the sixth position, just two points outside the top four.

Meanwhile, the hosts were equally impressive in their last outing against Hoffenheim last weekend. Christopher Nkunku continued his impressive form by grabbing a brace on either side of Georginio Rutter’s equaliser for Hoffenheim. Dani Olmo struck one more for Marco Rose’s side in the 67th minute to put the tie well beyond the reach of Hoffenheim.

After watching his side score 20 goals in their last seven matches, Rose will welcome Freiburg to Red Bull Arena confident of his side’s chances against a Freiburg side who will certainly present a tougher test than their previous opponents.

Possible Leipzig starting line-up

Freiburg

After watching their fellow title contenders Union Berlin get hammered last weekend, Freiburg will be keen to avoid such fortunes as they keep their sights on an unprecedented Bundesliga title.

Union Berlin were knocked out of their perch by Bayer Leverkusen who defeated them 5-0 at home. And so, Freiburg come into this tie as the closest team to Bayern Munich, with just one separating them from the champions in first place.

Head coach Christian Streich will be keen to see his side maintain their distance from the leaders by continuing to pick up all possible points on the offing, and a win over Leipzig will only bolster their impetus for a title charge.

Freiburg come into this game off the back of a fruitful week, where they sealed their passage into the next phase of the UEFA Europa League with a 1-1 draw against Qarabag, and a 2-0 win over Cologne in the Bundesliga. Goals from Woo- Yeon Jeong and Michael Gregoritsch handed Christian Streich’s side their eighth win of the season.

The German tactician will now prepare his boys for the trip to the Red Bull Arena, having failed to beat their hosts in their last five encounters since November 2020, with three losses and two draws. Freiburg have much more than just three points to play for and must give it their best to stand a chance against an in-form Leipzig side.

Possible Freiburg starting line-up

Mark Flekken; Lukas Kübler, Philipp Lienhart, Matthias Ginter, Christian Günter; Ritsu Doan, Nicolas Höfler, Maximilian Eggestein, Vincenzo Grifo; Michael Gregoritsch, Lucas Höler.

Injured: Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, Jonathan Schmid, Kimberly Ezekwem
