Real Madrid suffered a shocking loss in the hands of ninth-placed Levante

Real Madrid suffered a shock 1-2 defeat at home against Levante, with Roger Marti firing in a late winner.

The hosts were off to a nightmare start when Eder Militao was shown a red card for preventing Sergio Leone a clear goal scoring chance. Despite the set-back, Madrid were the one to draw first blood with the help of a stunning goal from Marco Asensio.

However, the defending champions started to feel the pressure of being a man down as Levante striker Junior Morales equalised around the half-mark through a top finish.

The visitors were handed a penalty in the second-half and much to their dismay, Roger Marti had his shot saved by Thibaut Courtois, who prevented Madrid from sinking. But that was not for long as Marti made up for his penalty miss by firing in the winner in the 78th minute.

Madrid’s eventful season has witnessed another set-back and now they are currently trailing table leaders Atletico Madrid by seven points.

Prior to last week’s win against Alaves, Los Blancos suffered back to back upsets against Athletic Club and Alcoyano, which saw them getting thrown out of both Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup.

Madrid’s standby manager David Bettoni, who took the responsibility in the place of COVID-stricken Zinedine Zidane, has insisted that his side would fight to defend the La Liga crown.

“The idea of this club is always to fight until the end for every trophy. With 10 against 11 it’s a positive sign, the effort of the players, I know people who love Real Madrid will have seen the same thing. Disappointed yes, it’s normal, it’s painful for everyone, but the team fought until the end.”
