The visitors were lucky to avert early pressure by Parisian as some of the close calls by VAR went in favour of Marseille. Marseille keeper Mandanda was superb under the bar, and he saved his team in number of occasions.

Though Paris Saint-Germain started with an excellent Ligue 1 home record, the rivals went ahead at 31st minute, as Florian Thauvin scored the goal from a free-kick by Dimitri Payet.

The match which was open to 5000 crowds, saw few ill-tempered moments throughout. Four of PSG and seven of Marseille players were cautioned with yellow cards before all hell broke loose in the injury time.

Five sent off, with a total of 14 bookings

Initially, Leandro Paredes, Layvin Kurzawa of PSG and Jordan Amavi, Dario Benedetto of Marseille were shown red by French referee Jerome Brisard. Paredes and Benedetto were each shown second yellow cards, whereas Kurzawa and Amavi were shown straight reds.

As these were not enough, Neymar was also shown a straight red in the 99th minute for his part in a brawl when the referee went to VAR. A VAR review showed Neymar had punched Alvaro Gonzalez in the back of the head.

Neymar who was playing his first match this season was seen angrily complaining to fourth match referee before leaving the ground.

With the defeat today, PSG are without a point and have lost their first two Ligue 1 matches for the first time after the 1984/85 seasons.
