Inter Milan win Serie-A after 11 years, as Atalanta and Napoli end up with dismal draws

Atalanta’s disappointing 1-1 draw

Atalanta have been unstoppable of late, not losing any of their seven games in Serie A, and had a great chance to further solidify their position at second place in the table if they ensured another three points against Sassuolo.

However, they ended up picking up a draw, with Robin Gosens’ first-half goal getting cancelled out by Sassuolo’s Dominico Berardi in the second half.

In addition, Atalanta played with 10 men for more significant parts after goalkeeper Gollini’s early red card. Sassuolo experienced a similar situation when their defender Marlon was sent off for picking up two yellows, with only 15 minutes remaining. Nevertheless, Atalanta couldn’t take advantage of it.

Inter crowned the champions

Atalanta’s draw meant that Inter Milan were automatically crowned the Serie A champions of this season with four games to spare.

Antonio Conte’s men were victorious on Saturday against Crotone and waited for second place Atalanta to drop points.

Inter have managed to put an end decade-long dominance of Juventus in the Italian top-flight, and it is their first title in 11 years.

Most of the credit goes to Conte, who transformed Nerazzurri into a more robust unit, unlike all of his predecessors.

Napoli fail to secure fourth-spot

Napoli missed their chance to move to the top-three after a 1-1 draw against Cagliari.

Gattuso’s men looked on course to pick up three crucial points after Victor Osimhen’s early strike, but Cagliari produced the equaliser in stoppage time through Nahitan Nandez.

Juventus, who were behind Napoli before the draw, skyrocketed to second place after a dramatic late win against Udinese.

The Partenopei have to ensure they win all of their remaining games and hope for any of Juventus, AC Milan and Atalanta to drop points.

Lazio keeping their top-four hopes alive

Lazio are enjoying a late surge this season, and after Sunday’s thrilling 4-3 win against Genoa, they are still in contention for the top-four race.

The Biancocelesti are currently sixth in the table, five points off the second-place Juventus, but they still have a game left in hand.
