UEFA has decided to take disciplinary actions against the three clubs who are still backing the European Super League
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are seemingly persistent in endorsing the European Super League.
While nine of the twelve founding members withdrew from the breakaway competition, the trio is said to be still offering their support.
UEFA have constantly been warning Real, Barca and Juve to back out of the competition, and now they have decided to take strict measures against the trio, and they could even be suspended from the Champions League.
A statement from UEFA read: “Following an investigation conducted by UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors in connection with the so-called ‘Super League’ project. Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona and Juventus FC for a potential violation of UEFA’s legal framework.
“Further information will be made available in due course.”
A month ago, the European Super League came into light after 12 founding members – Premier League’s big six, Inter, AC Milan and Atletico included – initially signed for the competition.
However, due to the overwhelming pressure from the fans, who feared this could change the landscape of football, nine of them opted against continuing with the league. Hence the newly-proposed competition crumbled.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin had earlier insisted there would be fewer sanctions for withdrawn clubs, but the teams still clinging to the ESL could face severe consequences.
“But for me, it’s a clear difference between the English clubs and the other six. They pulled out first; they admitted they made a mistake. You have to have some greatness to say: I was wrong.
“For me, there are three groups of this 12 — the English Six, who went out first, then the other three [Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Inter] after them and then the ones who feel that Earth is flat and they think the Super League still exists.
“And there is a big difference between those. But everyone will be held responsible. In what way, we will see.”
