Palmeiras 0-1 Tigres UANL: Gignac penalty sends Tigres to FIFA Club World Cup final

Andre-Pierre Gignac-Tigres UANL

The French striker was on target again after scoring the only goal of the game.

Andre-Pierre Gignac put on an impressive display as he helped Tigres UANL edge out Palmeiras 1-0 in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The Mexican club weren’t the favourites entering into the game but their win against Ulsan in the previous round, where Gignac shone with a double, made them competitive enough for Palmeiras.

Perhaps, it was Tigres who looked dominant from the off, keeping the entire defence of the Brazilian club on alert.

However, the Mexicans struggled to get past sturdy goalkeeper Weverton, who made a string of good saves to keep the score board intact.

The resistance was finally broken after the restart of the second half when Tigres UANL were awarded a penalty. Gignac was spotless from the spot as he put his side up front.

The 36-year-old was the hero for Tigres in the clash against Ulsan and once again he has risen to the occasion today by scoring his third goal in the space of less than a week.

The strike remained decisive until the end as Tigres booked the place in the finals of FIFA Club World Cup. They will face the winners of the other semi-final between Bayern Munich and Al Ahly. Bayern look the favourites to lift the title although they can expect some fighting spirit from the rest of the teams.
