Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0 in Der Klassiker, at Signal Aduna Park in the return leg of Bundesliga. The first leg ended in a goalless draw. With this win, defending champion are ahead of their closest challenger Dortmund by seven points.

The defending champion slowly found their footing and had their own attempt fended off the line when Lukasz Piszczek cleared Serge Gnabry from goal-line. In the fiercely contested first-half, Norwegian Haaland should have done better when he was sent through in the 33rd minute, but Alphonso Davies stole the ball away.

Goal: Bayern vs Dortmund

It was Joshua Kimmich’s delightful lob that decided the match for Bayern. Kimmich spotted Bürki off his line and chipped the ball from 20-metre range over the keeper. Burki was able to put the hand but was not forceful enough. Bayern stayed in control after the break. Erling Haaland was forced to make way for Reyna, after an injury scare at 72′ of the match.

Results and Records

  • Joshua Kimmich has scored three goals in Bundesliga this season from outside the penalty area, more than any other Bayern player.
  • Neuer was making his 400th Bundesliga appearance. Since his debut in 2006, no player has played as many Bundesliga games as him.
  • Hansi Flick has won 15 of his first 18 Bundesliga games in charge of Bayern Munich. The only other manager to do that was Pep Guardiola.

Post Match: Bayern vs Dortmund

That was the big step that we wanted to take. It was a bit of a strange game, but after Joshua’s goal, we tried to work a lot. It was important to win here in Dortmund.

Thomas Muller, Bayern Munich Midfielder

It was maybe the most beautiful goal of my life and also essential. I didn’t see him off his line, but we were told before the game that Burki stands a bit off his track, so I went for it, and with a bit of luck it went in.

Joshua Kimmich, goalscorer for Bayern Munich

I don’t live in the future the here and now is critical. We wanted to win and take a big step forward – we did that. We were focused, decisive and brave at times. I’m happy with my team.

Hansi Flick, Bayern Munich Manager

It will be very, very difficult. (We need to overcome) seven points in six games. It will be brutally tough.

Lucien Favre, Borussia Dortmund Manager

I think now onwards it is only up to Bayern Munich to decide the title. We’re seven points behind and can do nothing more than winning our games. But we have to hope they slip up three times. We know how good they are.
