Chelsea linked with a move for the Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy

The highly-rated shot-stopper has been tipped to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea look to have finally found the replacement for Kepa Arrizbalaga, who had endured a torrid spell last season.

According to reports, Chelsea are on the verge of completing a deal worth £20m for the signing of Mendy from Rennes.

The Blues No.1 Kepa had been inconsistent throughout the last season which saw him go down the pecking order of Frank Lampard. Willy Caballero assumed the role in the absence of the Spaniard, even in the Champions League knockouts and FA Cup finals.

Chelsea’s technical and performance director Peter Cech has stated that reinforcements would be brought to goalkeeping options in the transfer window.

Mendy joined Rennes last summer and has since been a revelation, helping his side earn a place in the Champions League.

The 28-year-old rose through the ranks, playing mostly for Ligue 2 clubs before moving to Rennes last year.

Chelsea were also understood to be keeping tabs on Nick Pope and Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak, but the interest looks to have withered.

The Blues have been reckless in the transfer window with the additions of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz.

Lampard is also said to be not done with the spendings as he wants to bring West Ham midfielder Declan Rice to Stamford Bridge.

It remains to be seen how Mendy would fare in the Premier League and if he could succeed Kepa permanently.
