Ajax have agreed on a fee to sign Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn, according to 90min.
According to the football website, Spurs and Ajax have struck a deal near £20m for the Dutch international, whose time in London has been unsuccessful. The 24-year-old was one of Jose Mourinho’s first signings as manager during the 2020 January transfer window and joined the north London club for £27m. He has long been expected to leave Antonio Conte’s side this summer after making just four Premier League starts all last season.
Ajax are the front-runner for his signature, with the Dutch club in the hunt for a new striker, having agreed to sell Sebastien Haller to Borussia Dortmund for around £30m.
According to a report in Evening Standard, the funds from the sale of the Ivorian striker will free up money for them to bring Bergwijn to Amsterdam.
The Dutch forward appears to be intent on moving and recently revealed his desire to be sold earlier this month, stating:
“I just need to go play.
“I want to leave Spurs now, that’s for sure.
“Is it important that my new club plays in the Champions League? That’s not my top priority. It would be nice, but what’s important is that I’m going to play.
“I wasn’t allowed to leave Spurs in the winter and then I didn’t have any problems. But for the last few months, I was hardly looked after there. I want to go and play somewhere weekly.”
