Aston Villa consider Steven Gerrard and Roberto Martinez for the manager role

Dean Smith-Aston Villa

Villans are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Dean Smith.

Aston Villa sacked Dean Smith in the wake of the 1-0 defeat against Southampton at the weekend.

The pressure had been mounting on Smith after losing a series of games in the Premier League, and he bit the dust following the defeat against the Saints.

The Lions are working on finding a new manager, who can help them get back on the winning track.

According to Sky Sports, Aston Villa have narrowed their search to Rangers manager Steven Gerrard and Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez.

Gerrard has been doing an excellent job at the Scottish top-flight and led Rangers to the league title last season.

The former Liverpool midfielder was also apparently on Newcastle United’s radar after they underwent the Saudi takeover.

Villans CEO Christian Purslow shares a good relationship with Gerrard as both had previously worked together at Liverpool.

On the other hand, Martinez is open to leaving the Belgium national team and could favour a return to the Premier League.

The Spanish gaffer was also heavily linked with a move to Barcelona as a replacement for Ronald Koeman before they signed Xavi.

However, the Clarets have to pay a compensation fee for Gerrard and Martinez since both are at work.

Both Gerrard and Martinez favour attacking and possession-based football and their success in recent years make them a good fit for a struggling club like Villa.

Aston Villa are currently 16th in the Premier League with 10 points, registering 3 wins, 1 draw and 7 defeats after 11 games.
