Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle: Willock’s dramatic last-minute equaliser denied 3-points for the Reds

Mohamed Salah-Liverpool

Liverpool failed to move to the top four after a draw against the Magpies.

Liverpool succumbed to a 1-1 draw at home against Newcastle United, with Joe Willock scoring a last gasp equaliser in Premier League at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah gave the hosts an early lead inside three minutes with a brilliant finish but failed to capitalise on a flurry of chances in the first. Perhaps, Sadio Mane, whose performance has been scrutinised of late, had around five shots, but none were to greater effect.

Newcastle grew into the game and made the Reds’ defence look vulnerable on quite a few occasions in the second half. The Magpies thought they had equalised in the injury time through Joe Willock, only to be ruled out by VAR because of a handball. However, much to the belief of Steve Bruce, Willock made up for his mistake by scoring a well-deserved equaliser in the dying minutes.

The Arsenal loanee continues to turn up late for the Magpies as he had scored goals in such a fashion in the games against West Ham United and Tottenham.

Elsewhere, Jurgen Klopp’s men slipped up their chance to go into the top four, courtesy of another lacklustre defensive performance.

The Reds had thought their Anfield curse ended once and for all after their win against Aston Villa before they suffered another disappointing draw against Newcastle.

In fact, the Reds were held to a draw in their draw against Leeds United in their previous game by conceding a late equaliser, and they did so in today’s game as well.

The pressure would be on Klopp as their chances of retaining a spot in the top-four are hanging in the balance, with West Ham and Chelsea ahead of them in the table.

Liverpool have had the second most shots at home in the Premier League this year (146) but have scored the second fewest goals (4). [StatmanDave] #LIVNEW#LFC
