Germany managed to mount a comeback in the 2-2 draw against Hungary in Euro 2020, with Leon Goretzka netting a late equaliser.

The Germans’ Euro 2020 dreams looked vulnerable when Hungary took an early lead through skipper Adam Szalai, and the hosts failed to respond for the remainder of the half.

Germany had their equaliser through Kai Havertz, but it was soon cancelled by the fighting Hungarians, with Andras Schafer finding the nets.

Leon Goretza became the hero for Joachim Low’s side when he put the Germans on level terms in the 84th minute.

As a result of the draw, Hungarians were crashed out of the competitions while Germany secured their round of 16 berth after finishing second in Group F.

It looked as a Deja Vu for the Germans – 2018 World Cup exit – when they were trailing 2-1 with the clock already past 80. However, this time, Joachim Low turned towards Leon Goretzka on the bench in the place of Ilkay Gundogan, and the move paid off when the Bayern Munich midfielder scored the equaliser.

Underdogs Hungary won everyone’s heart

Drawing in the Group of Death (Group F), Hungary were deemed the least favourite side. However, they managed to surprise Portugal, France and Germany with their fighting spirit. Having picked up a draw against World Champions France, Hungary nearly did the same against German by scoring two goals in both halves before they conceded two more. They could have recorded historic wins against both France and Germany, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case and are they have also been eliminated from the competition. Thus, Hungary also proved themselves as one of the real underdogs of Euro 2020.

Joachim Low – a relieved man after the victory

Low was found anxious for the entirety of the game as a defeat would have marked his last game with the Germans. Following the win against Portugal, things were looking in favour of the Germans, but they dealt an early blow after Hungary’s goal. However, Low oversaw his side pull off a thrilling draw to secure their place in the last 16.
