Tigres UANL 2-1 Ulsan: Gignac’s double puts Tigres in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup

Andre-Pierre Gignac-Tigres UANL

Asian side Ulsan knocked out of the competition despite an early goal.

Andre-Pierre Gignac scored a brace to help Tigres UANL beat South Korean outfit Ulsan in the second round of FIFA Club World Cup.

However, it was the Asians who struck first in the so-called ” clash of the tigers”, with centre-back Kim Kee-hee netting a header from the corner-kick.

Not long after, Tigres found the equaliser through Gignac, who netted an header from Diego Reyes’ assist, resulting from a corner kick similar to Ulsan’s first goal.

The hosts were awarded a penalty by the VAR in the added minutes of the first-half after a hand-ball was detected. Gignac was spotless from the spot as he hit past Jo Hyeon-woo to make the scoreline 2-1.

The French striker carried his excellent form from Liga Max, where he currently tops the scoring charts with 14 goals. The 35-year-old has also been consistent over the past few seasons.

The South Koreans looked the better side in the second half, creating a decent amount of chances but to little or no effect.

There was a moment when Yoon Bit-garam thought he had equalised for Ulsan Hyundai with a magnificent strike but it was deemed offside in the end.

Tigres were victorious in their opening game of the FIFA Club World Cup campaign and will face Palmeiras in the semi-finals this Sunday.

Meanwhile, it was a tough day for Ulsan to be on the receiving end despite putting on some serious fight in the second half.
