Bayer Leverkusen beat Schalke 04 to Climb to second spot in Bundesliga this season.

Bayer Leverkusen seized their opportunity to climb to second place on the Bundesliga table with an accomplished display to win Schalke 04.

The highflying visitors recorded their fourth win in five league games to put them in a good position to mount an unlikely title challenge together with the well-established trio of Bayern, Dortmund and Leipzig.

The win saw them maintain their unbeaten start to the season with six wins and four draws in ten games and keep the hosts rooted in 18th place.

Schalke 04 are having a difficult spell in the Bundesliga this year and found Leverkusen tough to deal with. The visitors began the game on the front foot and were ahead in just the 10th minute through a Malick Thiaw own goal.

Leverkusen continued to dominate and pile pressure on their hosts, but could not double their lead inside the first half.

However, they eventually found a way through the Leverkusen defence when Julian Baumgartlinger connected well with a Leon Bailey corner in the 67th minute.

The hosts were presented with an opportunity to halve the deficit in the 72nd minute after a Daley Sinkgraven foul in the box. However, much to their disappointment, Steven Skrzybski’s shot was well saved.

Patrik Schick pressed home Leverkusen’s advantage in the 79th minute with a well-taken goal from a Nadiem Amiri through ball.

The win which was Leverkusen’s sixth in ten games was able to propel them to second above Leipzig following their result with Bayern in their last outing.

Leverkusen face Slavia Prague in the Europa League on Tursday while Schalke 04 are next against Augsburg in the league.
