Manchester United held Everton for a 1-1 draw in Goodison Park here tonight. Dominic Calvert-Lewin provided lead to Everton, which was overturned by Bruno Fernandez to provide United a point.

Everton vs Man United – Context

Manchester United and Everton both the team who are eyeing Champions League nomination fought for 3 points. Everton who had a great run after Carlo Ancelotti took over as the manager, lost hard last match against Arsenal and Manchester United beat Wartford.

Everton vs Man United – Goal

For both the goals goalkeepers were responsible to some extent. For Everton goal in the third minute of the match, the Spanish international took eternity to clear and Dominic Calvert-Lewin came chasing the ball. As de Gea shot the ball, it rebound from Everton forward to the back of the net.

For the Manchester United goal, Bruno Fernandez fired from 30 yards to the left corner of the goal. Pickford stretched himself, but the ball bounced in front of him before crossing goal-line. England coach Gareth Southgate would not be bemused to watch him concede in this manner, but he made up when he saved a few goal in the second half.

What the scoreboard won’t tell

  • Bruno Fernandez is the player, Ole Gunnar Solskaer was waiting for all along. He had been everywhere in last few matches and contributed to team’s success. Ole repeatedly said how happy he is with Portuguese signee.
  • Nemanja Matic and Bruno Fernandez both have a strike each which rebound back from post.
  • The match ended in a bizzare situation where Everton manager Carloi Ancellotti was shown red for arguing with Referee after the match as an Everton goal was ruled out controversially after VAR intervention.
  • Gylfi Sigurdsson was lying offside in front of United goalkeeper David de Gea when the goal was scored in injury time. Goodison Park erupted in joy, only to be turned furious, when the goal was ruled out on account of obstructing goalkeeper’s vision by Gylfi. As the Everton player was lying, it was impossible for his to obstruct de Gea’s vision.
  • When Sigurdsson was lying down in offside position, he made sure the ball did not touch him. But it was unfortunate for Everton and Dominic Calvert-Lewin that the goal was ruled out.

Result and Records

  • Since Carlo Ancelotti’s first game with Everton on 26 December, only Liverpool (30) and Manchester City (19) have won more points in the Premier League than the Toffees (18).
  • Everton have yet to lose at Goodison Park in the Premier League since sacking Marco Silva, winning four and drawing three games since his departure.
  • David De Gea has made seven errors leading directly to an opposition goal in the Premier League since the start of last season, the joint highest alongside Jordan Pickford, Martin Dubravka and Bernd Leno.
  • Since Ancelotti’s first game in charge, Calvert-Lewin has scored more Premier League goals than any other player in the competition (8).

The decision was difficult. From our side we say Gylfi (Sigurdsson) didn’t affect the vision of the goalkeeper and they decided differently. Sometimes it is right sometimes it is wrong. But the performance gives us more confidence that we can compete with these teams.

It’s something that happens in football once in a while if you take too long on the ball. Calvert-Lewin always chases everything and it’s unfortunate that it goes in the goal. We responded and got the goal we deserved.
