Everton have opened contract talks with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as they look to secure the England international’s long-term future.
Pickford was crucial to Everton avoiding Premier League relegation last season and is about to be rewarded for his stellar performance with an improved new deal, according to Daily Mail.
The 28-year-old, who joined Everton from Sunderland for £30 million, has two years left on his current deal at the club. But Everton feel that tying him to a new deal will put off other clubs who are circling for his signature, given the club’s financial issues. The Toffees are close to hitting the Premier League profit, and sustainability guidelines and so are vulnerable to offers for their key players.
Newcastle had been linked with Pickford before they opted to sign Nick Pope for £10 million.
Pickford has endured criticism from certain quarters throughout his spell at Goodison and was at times under pressure to keep his position as the undisputed number one. But, last season, he was much improved and was crucial to Everton’s Premier League survival fight towards the end of the season.
Frank Lampard sees him as a key part of the club’s future as the Everton manager looks to tighten up his defence.
Lampard hopes that will be boosted further by the signing of free agent James Tarkowski, whose arrival should be confirmed this weekend.
