Liverpool are reportedly leading the race for the signature of Belgian winger Jeremy Doku from Rennes according to reports.
The Reds view the 19-year-old as an ideal replacement for Sadio Mane and are ahead of the queue in the race for his services.
According to RTL Sport, Jurgen Klopp’s men are working to bring Doku to Anfield next year and are already speaking to his representatives.
The teenager has been attracting interest from several clubs, including Jurgen Klopp’s side, who have been pursuing the player for some time and are continuing to monitor his progress.
Doku joined Rennes in the summer of 2020 from Anderlecht in a deal worth £22m. Since his arrival, he has become a key part of Bruno Génésio’s side and made 30 appearances in his first season, scoring two goals. His rise to prominence saw him make his international debut in the Nations League clash against Denmark in September 2020. Overall, he has made 10 appearances for his country and is considered one of the brightest rising stars in a star-studded Belgium side.
Doku is fast and skilful and possesses a skill set that matches that of Liverpool star winger Sadio Mane.
The Senegalese and his compatriot Mohamed Salah will be unavailable for Liverpool in the winter due to the African Cup of Nations engagement with their national teams. Both players turn 30 next year and are thought to be in the period of their career when their game time will be reduced, and so Liverpool are looking to have a cover ready for them.
In Doku, Premier League giants will have a player who can comfortably provide cover for Salah and Mane, as he can play on either flank. He has been nominated for the 2021 Kepa Trophy alongside some very big names.
Although a deal for him will come in the summer of next year, Liverpool are willing to wait.
