After the merger of the Paris Football Club and Stade Saint-Germain on August 12, 1970, the Paris Saint-Germain Football Club was born. PSG is currently the most successful club in League 1.
PSG made an immediate impact after being formed, winning promotion to Ligue 1 in their first season. However, their success did not last long, and the club disbanded in 1972. PSG was administratively relegated to Division 3 while Paris FC stayed in Ligue 1.
In 1982, the Parisians won their first major trophy, the French Cup, and in 1986, they won their first Ligue 1 title. The Parisians won their second league title in 1994 and their first major trophy, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, in 1996.
At the beginning of the 21st century, PSG visibly struggled to hold the ground despite big names like Ronaldinho and Pauleta in the team. In 2011 fates changed when new majority shareholders Qatar Sports Investments, brought big names like Edison Cavani, Thiago Silva and Neymar to the team.
PSG made history by reaching the Champions League final for the first time in 2020, where they lost 0–1 to Bayern Munich.
Many legendary players have been part of the PSG squad. George Weah and Safet Sucic were part of the 1980’s squad during the club’s early glory. In 2011 after the club’s takeover of new owners, PSG has seen an inflow of many great players who end up setting the club’s benchmark. Big names like Ronaldinho, Pauleta, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Neymar have played for the club.
Jean-Marc Pilorget has the highest no of appearance for the club(435) while is the all-time top scorer with 200 goals.
The rivalry between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille is fierce; matches between the two teams are known as Le Classique or The Classic. This is the biggest fixture in League 1. Two of the most successful clubs in France have been bitter adversaries for decades. The rivalry remained fierce till the 2000s but in recent times PSG has outclassed Marseille, thus increasing the gap between them.
