Barcelona 2–1 Real Sociedad: Alba, de Jong stop Real Sociedad’s winning run

Frenkie de Jong-Barcelona

Goals from Jordi Alba and Frenkie de Jong in the first half were enough for the Catalans to subdue Real Sociedad

Barcelona have picked up a crucial win against La Liga leaders Real Sociedad, marking their second win in a row in La Liga.

The Catalans were desperate for a win before they entered the game due to their substandard season in the league.

Despite La Real drawing first blood with a goal from Willian Jose, Barca enforced a fight-back, which saw them get on level terms minutes after when Jordi Alba scored a brilliant goal with his right foot. Frenkie de Jong later added another one to the tally right before the half-time, thus giving the Catalans 2-1 lead. The Dutchman’s importance to the side has increased of late as he has now been involved in two goals in the last two games.

The second half was a goalless one although there was a shift in momentum from the visitors, who tried to put off Ronald Koeman’s side but to little effect.

Antoine Griezmann could have easily tripled the lead if not for his shot hitting the top of the post while Martin Braithwaite, who got the start ahead of Philippe Coutinho, fired his shot over the bar.

Barca are starting to show signs of a fight-back as they are currently fifth in the league table, two points shy of Unai Emery’s Villarreal.

Meanwhile, Sociedad have been handed their second defeat of the season and dropped to the second position in La Liga.
